First time that the oscars didn't irritate people that much?...

At least that was my experience considering the best picture award. You can find things to be mad about in other categories(Why the hell was Tron not nominated for original score I will never understand) but not the best picture. And there is a pretty good reason for it...It was the actual quality of the nominations. Although I have not seen all of the nominations for best picture, every single one I have seen are very good movies. Even if your personal choice didn't win you cannot really be angry since the eventual winner is a worthy one. There is no visual fun fest with no real content or a nonsensical bullet fest that is trying to be artsy with no effort at all this time...(aka. last years' awards)...Let us take them one by one(what I have seen at least)

BLACK SWAN: Just my favorite movie of the year. I am a huge fan of Aronofsky's movies of course and this is truly one of his best. The visual style is really incredible. The man just shows everyone what cinema is all about. It is a visual medium. And if there is anyone that knows how to tell a story using images and symbolism that is him. The atmosphere was gloomy and disturbing(a seminar of how horror movie should be made), the characters beautifully evolved, the cinematography exquisite and the imaging always telling more that the actors themselves. And of course Natalie Portman on the best performance in her (adult)career. The only thing I did not like in this movie were the damn jump scares. Not that they are bad. There are only 2-3 of them in the movie and are placed as effectively as they can be. But I don't like jump scares  in general. They are annoying and serve no purpose. I mean must you scare the audience by startling them? How cheap is that. Real horror scenes are those that make you consciously say to yourself  "Holy shit this is really disturbing". And you can feel that in this movie because it does rely more on real horror to scare you. Yes! Beyond these 2-3 cheap jump scares the movie uses its imagery with a really effective way. Making you really uneasy as you watching the character deteriorating into madness, with the last 20 minutes being completely unable to turn away from what is  happening on screen.Simply the best this year.

INCEPTION: One of Nolan's best(still think Memento is better). The ideal action movie. It follows the proven Matrix method. A great premise well described in the beginning of the movie,  an interesting and intriguing universe set up and when it is all in place you enter a movie roller coaster. Nolan has proven in the past that he can deliver fresh and original action cinematography that can satisfy everyone. He does nothing less here. Scenes that one can never look away from. Fast paced, intense and impressive. And the editing.... WOW... How can a movie have so many threads happening at the same time and not only be able to present it to you in a way that you don't miss the continuity at all but also enjoy every last minute of it. And the music just awesome. With all that said it is still just an action movie. People are so hyped up on the deep plot and the originality of the premise but you know what....The plot is not really that deep... The themes are very serious but only scratch the surface. And good thing they do because if it was deeper it might spoil the rest of the movie. The idea of entering one's dreams like this and many of the characteristics of the universe are done numerous times in the past and not only in movies but on other mediums, including games like Dreamfall and anime like Paprika and Ghost in a shell (which I recommend btw). The premise is not that original but well made and refined in a great action movie that respects its audience.

KING'S SPEECH: The huge winner of the awards. Not my first pick but still a pretty strong movie. The real tale(more or less) of the troubles King George had with his speech impediment and how the manages to overcome them with the help of his doctor and eventually become the voice of strength for Britain in WW2. You can say many good things about the movie, the cinematography, the costumes, the pacing. But that would not have any meaning. The movie's center attraction is the interaction between the characters played by Rush and Firth. The epitomy of great acting. And Firth just performs excellent. Well deserved award indeed. The only real problem of the movie was something my flatmate manage to locate. The fact that this movie is by default made to win awards like the Oscars. Nothing really original. The main plot, the scenery, the roles are all following the standard mainstream norms. This movie does not provide anything new. It is the same recipe very well executed.Still a great movie to watch and worthy of recognition.

That's it for now....I 'll continue with the rest nominations soon enough....
