Divinity 2 Dragon Knight Saga

Back in 2002 Larian studios, a Belgian developer with limited resources, created the first game in the series: Divine Divinity. It was awesome. It was extremely buggy though. There were times that you could just be staring your screen thinking "What The Hell?????". But with the resources a company like Larian had it is understandable. And they did patch up the game eventually. The game was the perfect blend between classical RPGs and the Hack 'n' Slash action RPG styles. Nice story, beautiful world, lots of loots and great music. A joy for the RPG fan. After a prequel in 2004 there came the time for a actual sequel to the first game.It was released in the beginning of 2010 as Divinity 2 Ego Draconis.

It received a good bashing back then because of numerous bugs and not that good port to the consoles. Still understandable. Later in the year Larian released the expansion to ego Draconis and then a remastered version of the whole game that included both Ego Draconis and the expansion Flames of vengeance along side with more content and graphical improvements. This is the Dragon Knight Saga. What i had in hand was the PC version so i don't really have an opinion for the console port.So let's get to it.

Story-wise the game begins about  50-60 years after the first game. Back then the player as the divine one (Now named Lucian) destroyed most of the black ring but could could not make himself kill the baby that was supposed to be the embodiment of evil (!) and took him to raise as his son.Without getting to full details he raised the boy but eventually failed to keep his inner self hidden for long. He became Damien the damned one and a war begun between father and son.The battle was (of course) epic but in the end the unthinkable happened. One of the Dragon Knights, Lucien's most trusted warriors, betrayed and murdered him. The last battle was a stalemate and both sides withdrew. Many years passed with relative peace. Meanwhile the people, that have not forgotten the Dragon Knights betrayal, created the Dragon Slayers that hunt the knights down to punish them for killing their greatest hero. You assume the role of an initiate Dragon Slayer.

The story is really well thought of and while playing you will begin to understand more of what happened in the past and what danger lies in the future since obviously Damien is still alive. And the story has some pretty interesting twists in it.

As for the presentation the game is beautiful. The designs are unique,  the world open and diverse and exploring is a bliss. Great music as before. A lots of cool equipment and interesting enemies. You need of course a pretty good system to experience it in full but even with my old laptop I enjoyed it fine.

The gameplay is pretty different than before. Larian abandoned the typical rpg style camera and went for an action like 3rd person view. The game is a typical Action/RPG. It works pretty well. Your character advaces by learning skills from 5 skill trees. Priest , Warrior, Ranger , Mage and Dragonslayer. As with the first they is no restriction on which skill you want to select. So you can have any kind character you want with any kind of skill combination you can imagine. The possibilities are endless although some say that not all combinations work that well. The battles are fast paced fun and when you learn how to use your skills it gets really really fun.

There are also 3 unique aspects to the gameplay. One is the mind reading skill. For xp you can read the minds of NPCs for any kind of information. This could be anything from a straight solution to your quest to why the NPC cannot get laid. You don't use it very often because of the cost but at the times you do is very effective. The second is the battle tower. After a while you defeat a major opponent you manage to gain access to his battle tower. There you can do a number of things to help you on your quest using people you recruited on your way there. Things from crafting, training and alchemy to even create your own little monster minion to help you in the slaughter (Pretty useful this one). Great idea that of conquering and managing your own tower.Lastly the most awesome thing in the entire game. At some point in the progression of the game you gain the ability of the Dragon Knights. What is this ability you ask? Turning into a Fu#@%@ dragon. Yup at any point in the game(Except when there is magic preventing you...Damn) you can turn into a dragon and fly and bring havoc to your enemies. Unfortunately you cannot interact with the ground enemies when in dragon form but one can still enjoy every second of flying and destroying enemy defense towers using dragon fire!HELL YEAH!

Overall this game is excellent. Anyone that likes this type of games must play it. I liked every single minute of it. Ok it has bugs of course, as always with Larian, but they fixed a lot in DKS and although I found  myself looking at the screen like an idiot wondering what happened sometimes it was not that serious. Excellent game with great story, beautiful world and great humor btw. And also the game has a good price. Especially considering that you buy both game and expansion together. Hope they make the 3rd one soon.
