Jafar Panahi is an Iranian director. His latest movies "Crimson Gold" and "Offside" ware well received by critics and his work was honored in numerous occasions. He has received a number of festivals awards including awards by Cannes, Berlin and Venice Film Festivals. This acclaimed director was always motivated by his realistic thinking and disagreement with the current Iranian regime and this cost him last December both his physical and artistic freedom.
In the 20th of December of 2010 Jafar Panahi and another Iranian director Mohammad Rasoulov were sentenced to 6 years of imprisonment and 20 years of artistic silence. Practically for the next 20 years they are not allowed to make any films, speak to any journalist and are confined within the Iranian Borders. All this because of their involvement in the protests taking place in Iran these last years against the current regime's inhumane and undemocratic administration. The international movie community is obviously outraged but there is little one can do but to try and show their support and hopping that publicity might result in some form of pressure. That is what The Berlin Film Festival tried to do by appointing Jafar Panahi as a comity member and keeping his seat empty on stage in his honor.
If anyone wants to show some support to this man that was imprisoned because of his ideals and beliefs he may sign the on line petition. It cannot do much of a difference but helps keep the issue in the spotlight.
