On stranger Tides...Hmmm...Maybe....?

It's been a week since the new sequel of the Pirates of The Caribbean came to the cinemas...I had many hopes for this... It seemed that they were actually returning to the basics of the first movie that was truly awesome and abandoning the style of the previous 2 parts of the franchise that ware truly disappointing. Were these hopes satisfied?Well yes and no....

The first Pirates of the Caribbean was an entertainment gem...A movie modeled to the classic pirate legends with gold, magic and curses. It was a blast. Nice, simple, fun story, great protagonist, awesome villain. The other 2 main characters(bloom and knightly) were irritating but they had their place in the story. All in All good fun.The next 2 though....OMG....OK their scale was really grand and impressive I would give them that, but everything else...Stupid stories,  nonsensical characters, people coming from  the dead on a whim (killing every drama), Bloom and Knightly became from irritating to utterly annoying and they actually made the "Flying Dutchman", THE most legendary ghost ship, into a ship inhabited by fish people.REALLY? And all that backstabbing. They were really trying to convince you that pirates are not to be trusted and that these were smart movies. I was so bored at it that I completely lost interest by the middle of the painstakingly long 3rd movie. So when I saw the trailer for the 4th I was pleasantly surprised. The 2 unnecessary characters were gone(good riddance) and the whole thing again looked like a fun and pleasant pirate movie. YAY!!!

Well the truth is simple. For certain this is a much better movie than the previous 2. But still far from the quality of the first. For the good things. The premise is interesting. The treasure legendary and the magic and myth is there. Good action scenes and a very entertaining Johnny Deep as usual , even if he was a little bit more sane that usual. Good cinematography and well thought off scenes. And Penelope Cruz. Finally a beautiful woman in this movie that can actually pass as a pirate that knows how to use a sword. Loved the mermaids aslo and the fact that they can be dangerous. Although the whole ship thing was too over the top and silly. And the preacher subplot I actually liked .Very simple and cliche but it did not interfere with the main plot much and ended quite good...And the interaction between Rush and Deep was priceless. But as expected they managed to fuck up many more things.

Why is it so difficult to make a movie like the first. Keep it simple and basic and those simple things actually make the effort to do them well. The villain is a problem. Although he was expected to be grand and menacing and had this great built up he actually did nothing special in the movie. He was the most legendary real life pirate. And this is the only thing they could do with him? That is the problem with all the new villains in this movie.Great built up but nothing great happens.

There is actually a certain back story about Cruz 's relationship with Jack yet they just leave it be and almost drop it in the middle. WHY?This would be interesting why don't you give us more context. Make us care for the characters. And the main problem with Jack in this movie is one pointed out by almost anyone. He does not care about the plot at all!!!!!Why is he doing this, why? Throughout the movie he seeks something he does not care at all. He does not care about the Fountain, that is certain. He might care about the Black Pearl but he does not know about it from the start. He might care about Angelica, but why does he leave her on an island to die?It does not make sense. They are again trying to establish that the characters have no allegiances to each other but on the same time they try to establish that they care for one another. In the end they almost seem like complete idiots. WTF? Needless to say that this gets pretty old, pretty soon. And the Richards cameo, as much as I love seeing him, completely useless. Why do you not give him more screen time.

Anyway on the whole this is a much more entertaining movie than the previous 2 but still cannot be considered more than mediocre. A good watch perhaps but nothing special....
